Different Types Of Drinking Water Filters

There are four main technologies that are popular for drinking water filtration. Below we have given an overview of each technology and a list of the contaminants that they remove.

Sediment Filtration – Using a sediment filter removes particulate from your water including dirt, silt, sand and rust. Improving the appearance and mouthfeel of your drinking water.

Carbon Filtration – Activated carbon filters are used to remove an extensive list of contaminants from your water including chlorine, pesticides, herbicides, nitrates, PFOS, pharmaceuticals and chlorine by-products like THM’s. Carbon filters improve the taste, odour and appearance of water and are found in many drinking water systems including water coolers and filter jugs.

Reverse Osmosis – Reverse Osmosis systems produce the very best quality drinking water, using multiple stages including sediment and carbon filtration followed by a reverse osmosis membrane. In addition to the contaminants listed above they also reduce sodium, lead, fluoride, calcium, magnesium and phosphorous. However, with reverse osmosis there is a proportion of waste water.

pH Correction – Water with a pH lower than 6.5 is likely to be contaminated and can corrode metal pipework. Low pH is usually an issue associated with private water supplies, as local water boards that supply homes and businesses with mains water monitor the pH closely. Where pH needs correcting a filter that doses water with naturally occurring calcium carbonate is employed.
