You’ll be pleased to know that most Water Softeners can provide upwards of 10-15 years of service before maintenance is required, with the most common parts known to fail being the seals and pistons. In this case, repairs can often be carried out to get you up and running again at a fraction of the cost of a brand new system.
Do Water Softeners Need Servicing?
Whilst a service schedule isn’t a necessity, it is important you regularly check the system is working correctly. You can do this by performing a water hardness test at regular intervals, or when you notice a change in water quality. By following our 5 Tips For Maintaining Your Water Softener you can help to prevent any premature breakdowns or failures.
If you are experiencing issues with your system then it’s always best to call out a certified professional, who will be able to give a proper diagnosis. Nonetheless, we’ve noted some common problems to look out for below (and their potential diagnosis).
Common Problems That Can Occur When A Water Softener Requires A Service Or Repair:
- Water Is No Longer Soft – There are a number of reasons as to why your Water Softener may not be functioning effectively, including the system being in bypass mode, an electrical fault, low salt levels, a depleted resin bed or the regeneration process not operating as it should.
- Brine Not Drawn From Tank – Keeping your Water Softener topped up with salt is paramount to its operation. The salt level should be kept 2-3 inches above the water level, it is also important to ensure you are using the correct type of salt as per manufacturers recommendations to prevent ‘salt bridging’ which would prevent your water from being treated effectively. This could also be a sign that your valve needs servicing.
- Water Softener Is Not Regenerating – When your Water Softener valve is not functioning properly you may notice hard, or salty water as opposed to the silky soft water you are used to. The most common cause for a metered valve to stop functioning is build up of sediment or scale on the valve components. You will likely hear the sound of your softener regenerating but have hard or salty water as previously mentioned.
