This prevents biological growth both on and inside the filter, stopping the build up of biofilm. Particularly with unchlorinated water supplies a slimy, smelly biofilm can form over time, causing an unpleasant flavour and smell in the water downstream. Aside from their anti microbial properties, they act just like a regular filter of the same type (e.g. removing sediment or chlorine).
