Does A Water Softener Clear Existing Limescale?
The short answer, yes it does!
Once a water softener is installed it starts working immediately – clearing out existing limescale build up.
Over time, as soft water flows through the pipework in your home it will break down and remove existing limescale. Typically in just 4 weeks the scale will be gone from your kettle, in 4-6 months the scale will be completely removed from your hot water cylinder and in 2 years the scale will be gone from the rest of your homes pipework.
Will A Water Softener Improve My Skin?
Soft water is kinder to your skin.
When washing in hard water, the mineral residue left behind on your skin can lead to irritation, clogged pores and leave you feeling dry and itchy.
Softened water is kinder to your skin as it contains less minerals, ensuring skin feels silky soft and is less prone to dryness and irritation. Studies from the University of Sheffield show that washing in soft water reduces the severity of Eczema and decreases the risk of symptoms developing in younger children.
With soft water you also get a foamier soap lather so you don’t need to use as much, which is kinder to your skin, your wallet and the environment!
Does A Water Softener Help With Cleaning?
Say goodbye to de-scalers!
A water softener tackles limescale at the source before it reaches your taps and appliances – say goodbye to limescale build up once and for all.
Because you’ll no longer experience limescale build up, you wont need to purchase expensive scale remover and your other cleaning products will go further as softened water creates a foamier lather with detergents. You’ll even get brilliant looking whites by washing temperatures as low as 30’C all whilst using less detergent.
Don’t believe us? Check the back of your washing powder packaging, you don’t need as much when you have soft water!
How Do I Know If I Live In A Hard Water Area?
Did you know that approximately 60% of homes in the UK are effected by hard water?
The most obvious sign that you live in a hard water area is build-up of limescale in your kettle, on your taps and on your shower head.

How Do I Install A Water Softener?
Your water softener needs to be installed in a suitable location after your stop-cock, with access to a drain and somewhere suitable to run the overflow pipe.
If you choose an electric water softener then it must of course have access to a power supply. You will need an installation kit to fit your water softener, make sure to choose the right size to suit your existing pipework.
Installing a water softener usually takes an experienced plumber 2-3 hours. All of our systems come with comprehensive installation guides and operating manuals.

What Do I Need To Know Before Installation?
Before you water softener is installed you will need to know:
- The size of your existing pipework to make sure you have the right installation kit
- Your water hardness (all of our installation kits come with a water hardness test)
- Where the softener is being installed e.g. under your kitchen sink
- Where the nearest drain is and where the overflow will go
- Where the nearest power supply is (if required)
How Does A Water Softener Work?
Water softeners work using a process called ‘ion exchange’ to remove hardness forming molecules like calcium and magnesium from your water in exchange for sodium.
This happens inside the ‘resin bed’ of your water softener, when the resin bed becomes saturated a regeneration will occur.
During regeneration, the valve controls the cleaning of the resin bed using a brine solution and then rinses it to remove excess sodium – once this has taken place your water softener is ready to keep providing you with soft water.
